CHAPTER EIGHT

Grace stayed until she was sure her sister was gone, then went up to the counter to talk to Theresa. There was a small line at the register by then, and Theresa had to force herself to act like everything was normal until she could finally talk to her friend.

“I'm going to go talk to the detective again,” Grace told her once they had a chance to speak semiprivately. “I'm going to tell him about my meeting with her.”

“Do you think she had something to do with what happened to Molly?” Theresa asked.

Grace frowned. “I don't know. In a lot of ways, it makes sense. She was a hair away from threatening me for the money, you heard her. But … what was the point of killing my friend or breaking into my apartment? She knows I'm not keeping a million dollars cash in my apartment. She mentioned involving lawyers, too. I don’t think she would do that if she committed a crime herself.”

“That’s a good point,” Theresa admitted. “Maybe the lawyers were an empty threat? She might be trying to scare you into giving the money up.”

“If she was doing that, then she'd make it clearer she was threatening me, though, wouldn't she?” Grace shook her head. “Either way, thank you for letting me meet her here. And thank Liam too, when you see him. Why did he leave so suddenly like that?”

“Did you see that car he was walking toward?” Theresa asked. Grace nodded. “That's the same car I saw at the apartment building and then here in front of the crêperie yesterday. The same man has been watching from inside it each time.”

Grace glanced outside, but the car was long gone. “Did he get the license plate number? Or did the security cameras?”

“The security cameras only see the sidewalk right in front of the store, they wouldn't have seen across the street. But Liam might have gotten a picture. He tried, but I don't know if he was fast enough. Hold on, let me check my phone.”

She pulled out her phone and sure enough, he had already texted her an image. It was a blurry photo of the tan car driving away, the license plate nothing but a smudge of white and blue. She showed it to Grace, who sighed.

“Send it to me anyway, maybe the police can do something with it. This is so stressful, Theresa. I feel like I've barely even had time to mourn Molly. I’ve just been so worried every single second since she died.”

“I'm sorry,” Theresa told her. “I wish there was more I could do to help you.”

“You've done so much already. I'll just have to keep marching on.”

Theresa offered her a free crêpe for lunch, but Grace waved her off and promised she would eat something later. Theresa watched her go, feeling like she wasn't doing enough, despite Grace's words.

Her friend texted her an hour later with the news that she'd finally gotten the all clear to go back to her apartment, and that the cleaning crew would be done by four.
